It was a genuine goosebumps moment.
A friend posted a picture to my Facebook wall last week and, when I saw it the next morning I was simply stunned.
Nat Caf had their first show of the year as part of Rhodes University’s Orientation Week (O-week) for the new batch of first years and, the turnout was nothing short of incredible.

As ever, it was at the Union Bar and the image of all those people coming through to soak up some comedy was just amazing.
I guess it’s so striking because of the scale of growth the improv troupe has experienced. From a very small, low-key beginning in 2011, to the much larger core following that developed, it’s been some journey and one I hope continues to grow in strength.
I can only imagine how proud founder Matthew Jackson must be.
Of course, it’s no use having millions of people there if the quality of the comedy doesn’t exactly inspire them to come back for more.
One thing we always stressed in rehearsals was quality, rather than putting on a show just for the sake of it.
I really hope the group continues to work hard and really make Rhodes a hub for some of the Eastern Cape’s best emerging comedy talent.
Here’s to Nat Caf!
